Statesville

Scots-Irish Presbyterians and German Lutherans from Pennsylvania began arriving in the area about 1753 drawn by fertile soil and plentiful game and water. In January 1789,
Statesville was founded by an act of the General Assembly. The Statesville area was originally known as the Fourth Creek Congreation Settlement, named after a fresh water stream, the fourth creek west of the neighboring settlement of Salisbury. The first courthouse, built of logs on a lot next to the Fourth Creek Presbyterian Meeting House was completed by 1790. Downtown Statesville began as the lots around the courthouse were soon sold at a public auction for other businesses. In 1755 around two to three miles due north of the Fourth Creek settlement, a frontier fort named Fort Dobbs after the governor, was constructed. Fort Dobbs was the western most U.S. fort and provided protection for citizens from the many active native Americans who roamed the area from 1756 to about 1764. The fort was also considered to be the center district of the Revolutionary War.

The settlement became know as Stateville in 1790 when the legislature selected Fourth Creek Congregation as the site for the county seat. In 1847, Statesville was incorporated as a city. Though Statesville's leaders were pursuing the idea of railroads as early as 1833, the rails didn't arrive in Statesville until 1858. At the time, Statesville was still struggling to recover from a disastrous fire in 1855 that destroyed the majority of downtown's buildings. Growth began as Statesville became world's largest distribution center of roots and herbs and began leading the state in the production of tobacco and whiskey.

Four days after Confederate troops surrendered at Appomattox, Yankee invaders burned
downtown Statesville including the two railroad depots, freight buildings and the local
newspaper office. Everything of value not burned was stolen. After the Civil War all rail lines
to Statesville were cut to provide replacement railing in other areas. The daunting task of rebuilding began again.

In 1982, Statesville was redesigned as a Main Street City including 110 building renovations
costing over $23 million. Today, the growth and revitalization of the downtown retail district
is continuing and Statesville is listed on the National Register of historic places. If you are
looking to relocate in the area, you will find Statesville to be a grand place to call home!
